My Medicine Drums

Updated: Aug 14

In shamanism, the medicine drum is considered a sacred instrument used to facilitate journeys and healing. In Shamanic Breathwork, we use the rhythmic sound of the drum to guide us into an altered state. We drum everyone into the journey and we drum everyone back out at the end. The pulsing heartbeat of the drum allows us all to come into resonance together and with the Great Mother as we prepare to journey.

The sounds of the drum connects us to the ancient wisdom of our ancestors, inviting us into sacred remembering through songs and prayer – uniting us together as one.

As a shamanic practitioner and breathwork facilitator, I can’t imagine being without one of my cherished drums. I now have a collection of four, each used for specific reasons and circumstances. Each is unique in shape, frame, and skin. I am honored to transmit their medicine when I play.

My Wolf Drum was commissioned from @terigilfilen (USA), a visionary artist and friend with whom I’ve traveled to Peru in 2012 & 2013. Her partner Alan makes drums and she will birth something unique for you. Thank you Teri.

I’ve made my own drum, a four-day process, with @chalicemalcolm (NZ) who takes you on deep journeys to connect with the tree from which the rim was made, the deer from which the skin was cut, and the grandfathers and grandmothers who carry the lineage of the drums. It is a humble and deeply reverent proccess to birth a medicine drum. Thank you Chalice.

My octagonal drum I found on TradeMe years ago. I purchased it from it’s original owner and maker, a man who’d used the drum in many men’s circles. This drum has one of the best sounds and has been part of many breathworks, song circles, and plant medicine ceremonies with me.

My black REMO drum is a synthetic drum that always sounds good no matter what the weather conditions whereas each of the natural drums will change their sound depending on the environment.

By immersing into their sounds, the drum carries us into deeper parts of ourselves where healing happens.
